Hi,

I recently had the chance to buy a C.S. Rosson Side by Side Self-Opener in a spend-all-the-time-in-a-gunsafe-condition. Looks and feels like new. See pictures attached. I have read all available information concerning C.S. Rosson on this forum and frankly anywhere online I could find.

I am hoping anyone here has some tip or can point me in the direction of a book on C.S. Rosson. [img]https://ibb.co/rFHFWkr[/img]

Gallyon (the successor, who bought out C.S. Rosson, sadly cant help either. All Books concerning Rosson were destroyed in a fire)

I hope to catch a few nice doves and pheasants with this beauty. The 27 inch barrels make for a light and fast pointing gun. Perfect for pheasants.

There should also be at least something on him in Nigel brown's books. I can look at mine when I get home.

I collect guns made in Derby and was actually shooting clays today with a Charles Rosson of 4, Market Head, Derby who was the father of Charles Stanley Rosson who opened a shop in Norwich where your gun comes from. I believe someone is writing a book on the Norwich part of the Rosson family. I have loads of information of the Derby side. The younger brother, Percy James Rosson, continued in the Derby shop until 1949 following the death of Charles senior. There must have been some sort of fall out between the two brothers as neither would recognise the existence of the other. For a period the guns and cartridges were named 'Charles Rosson of Derby and at Norwich'. There is a book 'Gallyons, Gunmakers of east Anglia' which covers some of the Norwich connection. The Norwich Rosson went into partnership with Charles Hellis in a cartridge making venture in 1953 which was short lived.

The 27 inch barrels were a sort of standard for C.S. Rosson much the same as Woodward with his 29" barrels. An easy way to date your Rosson is by the serial number as the first two number are the year it was made. It’s the Norwich side of Rosson, so the adress is rampant street.

Your tip with the serial number already helps. My Rosson would have been produced in 1933 then. Two years after the self sliding opener was patented. That really is a cool way to open your shotgun. You can easily do it with one hand, in my opinion better than the standard side-lever.

Nice wood on that one. I hope you enjoy it. My very first English double was a C S Rosson 12 bore boxlock. Came in a Rosson case. Bought it from Dixie Gun Works here in the states when they used to have a used gun catalog. I still have it.
