I have a small quantity of live centerfire rifle shells that someone out of state expressed interest in buying. I checked the UPS web site to determine the shipping cost. When filling out the information-- destination, size and weight of package, what was being shipped, etc.-- I wrote, "1 Box Rifle bullets." A note popped up stating that this item was prohibited. I deleted that entry and instead wrote "Ammunition", and I was able to complete the form to show the shipping cost. I apparently could have then printed the shipping label.

I don't intend to proceed with the potential sale, but I am curious why my attempting to ship a package containing "ammunition" didn't raise a
flag.

It is my understanding that both FedEx and UPS will ship ammunition but it must be taken to a central hub station( where the tractor trucks pickup), I believe that's what they called them, and the box must be marked with their specific hazardous labeling. USPS with not ship ammunition.

I think you may be able to set up an on line account and then have them pick up at your address and ship. If you don't want to do that then you must go to a customer service hub. Even then, its not easy.

I've shipped handloaded turkey shells via UPS at the hub to a buddy once and the intake person couldn't understand that they weren't factory ammo. She demanded to know the brand of ammo. I finally gave her the name of the hulls and that seemed to satisfy her. I don't know what the penalty would be for shipping in the US mail, but I treasure my right to hunt and bear arms more than I do saving a buck or two and don't want to discover the penalty from the blind side. I would go to the nearest UPS store and ask them. There's a UPS store located in a grocery store near me and shipping ammo with them is painless, I give them the box, tell them what it is and they tell me the cost. Never any transit issues. Fedex, I believe, has to be taken to a hub.

Our local UPS store will not ship ammo. I would need to take it to a hub which is a 40- mile round trip.

That stinks. It might just be the manager of that store, it might be worth calling a different store. PO office employees are like that, they have a habit of making their own rules.

You found a UPS Store employee who does not know their policy. The ones who denied shipment of ammo are not making up their own rules. "tut" spelled out how to properly ship with UPS but it's laid out clearly on the UPS website if you wish to read it direct from the source.

I have an account, do the paper work at the house and take it to the UPS hub. You also need to put the 4" black and white hazardous material triangle on the outside of the box.
