My wife just brought back her great grandfather's gun - and it's a strange looking thing. It's a single shot hammer gun, with the hammer over on the right side, to the right of the top lever. No markings as I can see. But I haven't figured out how to get it apart yet, so I don't know all that might be there. It looks like it was a low end gun when new, and it's a wreck now, but I'm curious - was this ever a common configuration in the past?

Sure. I've seen lots like you describe and I've seen some very high end ones. They served the same purpose and filled the same niche as guns like the H&R break open single shots do now.
