Hello gentlemen, I am trying to understand the proof markings on a William Read & Son's . 20 bore that I'm about to purchase. The shotgun is advertised as having 2 1/2" chambers, however I am seeing a clear 70 stamped. Here is an image of the underside of the barrels,  If you have knowledge of these proof markings, I would love to hear your insights into them. Thank you, STS

looks like 2 3/4in chamber....nitro proof.....don't see a date stamp so pre 23 or so.....

Thank you. Do you have any thoughts about shooting RST loads with this shotgun? Barrels are marked Krupp Fluid Steel. Here is a photo of the water table,

You're certainly good to go with RST.
If it were 1924 or later, you'd have gauge followed by chamber length (ex: 12-70) as one of the proofmarks.

Can you confirm it wears Krupp tubes? Looks like Essen & a Wildmann just forward of the flats. Liege was rolling most of the tube blanks for a time.

Here is a photo of the water table, The gun has a double underbite, third fasteners, and sideclips. You should be able to shoot just about any 2-3/4" 20 gauge cartridges if the barrels are still in proof.

Are there load markings on the barrels? This is a 12g S. Bougnet for William Read. Max. service load for smokeless proof was marked only 1897-1903. "E.C." No. 3, Walsrode Gray, and Mullerite No. 2 33 grain = 3 Dram, with 1 1/8 oz. shot.  20g Manufacture Liegeoise1.68 grams "poudre" = 26 grains of a 33 grain bulk powder = 2 1/4 Dram Equivalent; 21 grams "plombs" = 3/4 oz. shot

Many thanks Drathhaar. Can you read the steel type stamp on the underside of the tubes, like "Krupp Fluid Steel Essen"? I've confident that those tube wears Sauer's protective trademark of a Wildmann & a Staff.
