Green Dot is not a good powder for low pressure loads. 800X works better but some don't like how it meters. If you go to the Hodgdon site you can figure several good load combinations and then have to round up the various components.

When looking for dead powders or ammo I look at small gun shops or gunshows as my go to place. Gunshows are mostly over priced but beggars can not be choosy. I have found many single pounds of discontinued powders or odd ammo lots from time to time. It is just as easy to look for odd things while looking for common stuff. I found PB by looking at a Facebook photo for a gun shop. The distinctive brown label gave me enough reason to call the shop. The owner confirmed that he did indeed have some PB and the price was fairly reasonable. But the problem was he would not ship it to me and he was four hours away. After a few minutes talking to him I found out his father in law lived less than 30 minutes from me and he could bring it down to me the next time the family met. So I gave him a credit card number and bought all that he had. Two weeks later I had my powder in hand.

The load using universal is from the hodgen site but capacity isn't good using 8 shot. I'm using a fiber wad to make up the difference. What a pain in the rump. Why would they discontinue PB when so many of us use it. Finding a new load combo is challenging.

Ok, comparing PB to Clays. Are they close in filling capacity. In other words, will 20 grns of Clays be close to 20 grns of PB in volume. Also, are you referring to
Clays or International Clays.

"IF" I want extreme low pressure I shoot "BLACK" . With smokeless I try to stay above 7K & then only with fast to medium burn powders. For medium slow to slow I don't go below 8K, but my loading was always for hunting purposes, not targets.
For warm weather use only you can get away with some lower pressure than might be encountered in hunting loads. Within these parameters I have found Green Diot to be a very Desirable powder. I lost all confidence in low pressure 7625 loads in a duck swamp with temps in the 20's & this with a load taken directly from DuPont's manual with pressure around 7K. Green Dot works fine at this pressure range. Most powders with a Nitro Glycerin content will I believe burn Hotter than will a single base powder which personally I deem to be a good thing in cold weather.

Burch, PB and Clays are different in volume,but a nitro card over the powder should do the trick.

When I first started reloading STEEL shot for waterfowling, the preferred powder was Blue Dot.

Along came Alliant steel, and in a 7/8 oz load, it can propel steel shot to 1700 fps. At 8000 psi.

I have never seen a recipe with Alliant Steel powder down loaded to 6-7000 psi, nor with lead as the projectile.

Anyone have any reasons?

I have no idea as to the why on the lead, but I suspect the reason you don't see loads below 8K is this powder will not burn properly at low pressures, "VERY FEW" slow powders will. Slow powders were basically not designed for low pressures, they were designed to move heavier pay loads, give higher velocities or Both. This was done by "Retarding their burn rates which is not normally compatible with low pressures

After chasing-my-tail to find Clays and Green-Dot, 700X and you-name-it I switched gears at the advice of others who are smarter than I am ("Republican" at ShotgunWorld.com).

I know you asked about "PB"--but here's food-for-thought.

And later in the thread, I see you mention 2-1/2 inch cases...I'm shooting standard 2-3/4 inch cases.

Anyhow, I suggest you check out the Nobel Sport powders.

This year I've shot somewhere between 8 and 10k rounds using 1-oz. 12 ga. shells using Vectcan AS from Graf and Sons. This is a powder similar to Green Dot. All these were loaded in "Gun Clubs" which are currently available, free, in unlimited quantity.

As luck has it, Green Dot is now currently available to me locally, at a decent price--but I after this new experience, I prefer Vectan.

You just missed the bro-deal on the haz-mat--but if you score a decent amount the shipping won't sting as badly.

I haven't looked, but I wonder if there is anything with in their line with a pressure as low as you listed.
