And that that you buy into the premise behind them, in the first place. Same for the pheasant forecasts from SoDak each year. Fun to banter about in August, but often disappointing in the real world in October-November.

I found it was interesting that the noted that hunter numbers did not peak with the recent upswing of bird numbers. Sounds like the numbers of hunters has leveled off or declined and is likely to recover. Ans by the tone of the report they don't seem to have a clue why that has chanced.
Hunters, who require dogs to hunt, have a much longer lead time to get back into a sport. If you are a Dove shooter and stop because numbers are down for a few years, you can get right back into the sport buy buying a few boxes of shells and the appropriate hunting licensees. If you need a dog to hunt it take a year or more of deliberate planning and training to get back into a sport. At some point, many who had dogs who are retired or dead, will get to the point that they will no longer buy and train another as they have found other interest to pursue.

Just from a "seat of the pants" analysis, here in NW Kansas, we have many fewer hunters then just a few years ago.Lots of things contribute, but a downturn in Birds and lots more posted ground are the main factors, I think. We discontinued our Legion opening nite "smoker " 7 or 8 years ago, and the attendance at the morning pancake breakfast is mostly locals and relatives. Opening day we saw only a few parties of hunters out. And in my opinion I see very few young folks..

Quail in the Texas Panhandle appear abundant again! Bobs are doing well and blues have made an astounding comeback. Worlds of weed seed and bugs are plentiful. If it all works out this will be two years in a row for bumper numbers.
