Gentlemen, five years ago in Italy I found new evidence regarding Hemingway`s deadly shotgun.

If anyone is interested

Yes, suicide ran in the masculine side of the Hemingway family- Ernest's father, Dr. E. Hemingway, shot himself in the head with his own father's Colt Civil War pistol- upstairs in his library in Oak Park. A great homeopathic physician (read "Indian Camp"), he invested foolishly in bogus Florida real estate during the "Roaring 20's" and the Ponzi era"-and lost everything. About the same time EMH's novel "A Farewell To Arms" became a best seller- and Ernest felt compelled to support one of the many women in his life he came to hate- Grace Hall Hemingway, his mother-

His younger brother Leicester, and his son Gregory, and one of his grand-daughters (Jack's daughter) all died by their own hands, as he did in July, 1961 in Idaho-- True indeed, the Greek phrasing; "Those whom the Gods bless with great gifts, they also destroy with a great and exceeding madness: Mozart, Van Gogh, Hemingway, James Joyce, Scott Joplin, George Gershwin-and the list never ends..

Gil, I share your sentiments. I have Karsh's turtleneck print No. 2 of Hemingway looking over my left shoulder as I write, and admire him solely for his great contribution to literature.

For all the rest, I hoist it aboard with reservations of his character, leavened only by the scene of our Morley Callaghan beating the piss out of him in Paris with Fitzgerald holding the watch.

I knew Callaghan, a skinny little guy who must have spotted Hemingway by 30 pounds, and worked with his two sons Barry and Mike in Toronto. My favourite also: For Whom the Bells.

Fox, thank you for the spelling correction.

You fail to note "Across the River". It is my favourite and contains some good shooting and life lessons.

His private life outside of hunting and fishing does not interest me too much, I find it a little sad and feel for his children. I have always imagined that creativity of that caliber comes at a price in personality sometimes.

Francis,
I attempted a half-hearted Hemingway tour while in Paris, Christmas of 2013. I was hoping to visit Harry's New York Bar, but it didn't work out. My family was less inclined, but we compromised in visiting the successor in spirit of Sylvia Beach's Shakespeare and Company in the Latin Quarter. Beach's original bookstore, a haven for Hemingway and other ex-pats of the 1920's, ceased existence in the 1940's. American George Whitman opened the successor in 1951 at a different location. I read A Moveable Feast while there and I thought it a real hatchet job on some of his friends, especially Fitzgerald. However, those feelings were softened somewhat when I realized it was published posthumously and might not have ever seen the light of day otherwise. Here we are sitting in front of Shakespeare and Company, Christmas Eve, 2013. Gil

Paris-- Ah yes- I would love to visit, and have a French 75 (or two) at Harry's-- and perhaps imbibe a drink or two (Papa Doubles) at Le Duex Maggots as well- Who are the two very attractive ladies that are "bracketing you" in the photo, if I may ask. If, as I surmise, they are your wife and also your daughter, you are a most fortunate man. They do light up our lives, do they not. I like Hemingway's recollections and descriptive writing about Paris in "Islands In The Stream"__ Have you read that novel by any chance? Le Foch!!

That's my 'doodle hunting, dove shooting', 'shroom picking buddy. Don't he look sophisticated between those two lovely ladies in gay ol' Paree'? wink

No kidding, that's a nice pic Gil.

Hemingway made many life long friends here in Idaho. He got along well and was well liked. His son jack finished out his life here also. Jack was also well liked and served on State wild life commission, and is buried next to his father as are both his brothers. Other relatives and close friends are all in the same area of the Ketchum Cemetery.

September 8-9-10 are the dates for this years Hemingway Symposium in Ketchum. This is a three day event and always interesting. Two years ago they had the Curator of the Finca Vigia in Cuba as the guest speaker. Author Roger Sanger was present, and laid the ground work for the three Authors "Calabi, Sanger, helsley" To visit The Finca Vigia last year. My Hat is off to these guys as they have done a huge job in researching their book, and they are not done yet."Labor of Love" Maybe. Lots to do in Sun Valley along with the Symposium. Many good places to eat, Ice skating, gun ranges, rides to the top of the ski hill, hiking and horse back riding along with fishing.

Sun Valley Historian tells of Mary Hemingway moving Taylor Williams, so as to be with her and Ernest. Taylor Williams had passed on prior to Ernest and Mary.
