RWTF,Stegall did good work,(I don,t care much for his Fleur-de-Lis) but not his.I had one of his stocks, with a Sukalle barrel even,it was well marked in the barrel channel.

If I had to guess a maker for this stock, I'd go with Leonard Mews.

Bill thanks, do you have any examples that brings you to this conclusion? The timimg would certainly be in the right ballpark. We will research your suggestion. Do you or does anyone know if and how Leonard marked his work?

Monte Kennedy's checkering book shows lots of examples of Mew's work which have two characteristics in common with this stock: a very high level of skill and a fanciful 1950's sense of design. If it's his, this stock shows more restraint than he sometimes could abide. How he may have marked work I have no idea.

Lynn, There is a thread on this forum titled " A Lenard Mews thread" started by MP. If someone here cares to post it you can see his signature and stockwork. Dan.

The stock and checkering pattern looks very similar to a rifle my brother owns that was my uncle's. I'm not sure when he had it stocked, probably sometime in the late 40's early 50's. It was a model 70 in 300 H&H he said he shot the barrel out on, so he ordered one from Weatherby in the 270 cal and had it installed onto the action and restocked.
He and my aunt lived in Missoula at the time and I'm fairly certain he said the rifle was re-stocked my a Missoula stocker/gunsmith, but I don't remember the name.
After a bit of searching for early Missoula gunsmiths, I'm fairly certain my uncle said he had Ivar Hendrickson do the work on the rifle my brother owns. Maybe my brother has the details. I'll ask him.
