There are other ways of graying such as rust bluing and then removing the blue which pits the metal more or less depending on the bluing solution/technique; hot dip bluing and removing, or electroless nickel plating which when given a light blasting first with 320 grit alum. oxide to knock off the "chrome" look can be very nice.

What says Bob?

On my Fraser style rifle, engraved by Roger Sampson, I did a light blast of 320 AO then waxed the metal. Regular oiling/waxing and time has filled the engraving giving it a beautifully black engraved lines on a wonderful grey surface. Never any corrosion issues or concerns and I have used mine on hunting trips. I wax it before I go and dry it good if it gets damp.

Beautiful action and engraving. I would suggest contacting Steve Earle regarding his recommendations on appropriate heat treating. 8620 is specifically a casehardening steel, 4140 is through hardening.

LRF, I use Renaissance wax with just a pinch of lamp black to blacken it and this gives the engraving good contrast and protects the metal as you say. I use that on any grayed metal and also on plated metal just for the darkening of the cuts.

Doug, you might contact Marty Rabeno about what he uses. A lot of his engravings have beautiful grayed finishes applied.
