Of late, I have a building interest in acquiring another 99 Savage. Had one years ago that was stolen.

For some reason a 303 Sav. keeps coming to mind. What models can I look for with carbine or shotgun butt, not interested in crescent butts? Are there any scope mounts that would be akin to Stith type, ie tang holes and dovetail that would allow me to use a K-4, Redfield, even B & L adjustable mount; with out having to drill the action?

Half in jest and not exactly what you asked for but buy this and sell me the Boone for about $75 or so. I'm not that interested in the rifle but I have a small Boone collection going.

Hoot, that is a neat rig. Never seen one of those scopes, wonder how it compares to say a Unertl 4x or similar?

The scope is a 2-3/4x and not 4x as advertised. The 4x has a long eye piece for the added magnification. The optics on the ones here are very nice. However, I understand the whole mirror mounting bit is somewhat fragile and best limited to lighter recoil. They are relatively light and compact although, as you can see, stick up in the air a bit. At the very least, they will garner a few strange looks at the range!

The scopes all have a dovetail on the bottom and the mount is specific to the rifle. The 'coin slot' screw on the side loosens it all up. Early ads stated one could remove the scope and not lose zero. They even built a peep that could be slid in the mount for open sight applications.

I have mounts for a Marlin 36/336 and a Remington 81/181 and have been searching for years for one for a Marlin 39.

There is a fella named Mike who can be found on the 24Hour campfire savage collectors forum. Goes by Lightfoot. He makes and sells a no drill mount that mounts like a Stith(tang holes and rear sight dovetail)but it uses standard Leopold rings allowing the mounting of better optics than a Stith will allow.

Are there any quirks of 99s I need to be on the lookout for when looking at 99s? Any ideas on reasonable price ranges?

What is the deal with what looks like a rear sight on this
Savage 99 in 303? Is it a sight or a base for some sort of
scope mount?

PhysDoc, I looked at that gun looks like a nice gun that had a really hard life. I think that is a receiver site of some time.

I bought that 99 after you guys mentioned it. I have a left hand pattern stock for the 99 that I have been saving for such a project. The bore is great on the gun and there is no rust, just worn finish. The rear sight is a windage adjustable blade sight, very well made. It functions just like an aperture sight and gives a sharp picture even to my eyes. I'd venture that the sight is worth what I have in the whole thing.

The fore end tip is horn, a nice bonus!

I plan on restocking it, then shape the lever to the new grip, have the lever case hardened and the gun rust blued. I already have a lifetime supply of 303 brass for the two 99s in 303 now in my collection.

the butt stock could be easily repaired?
