Hello New guy here joined a couple months back and have been reading thru the previous posts learning a lot as I go. Now I need some help, I have an American arms derby 12 gauge side by side side lock that needs the cross screw (I hope I am calling it by the proper name ) it goes from the left side plate thru to the right side plate. It is in the back upper portion of the side plate but not all the way at the back this screw also has the portion of the detachable lock.I have tried to find this online but have not had any luck.Local guy wants north of 250 to make this piece (cannot justify that much)Does anybody know of any source for this part or where I can get this made at a more reasonable price
Thanks in advance Darrell

Let's see, $250 works out to about three hours of going rate shop time, and about the same time it would take to turn a new pin, fit it, index the slot, finish it, and blue it. Engraving is extra. That's for a proper job. If you want to save money, buy a lathe and make it yourself. How hard can it be? ;-)

I split the head on a similar screw that was on an 1850s vintage Manton 10 gauge. Because of the non-standard threads that these old guns use I had my local smith cut a new roughed-in screw with the proper threads for me for about $40. I fitted the screw, indexed the slot and finished it myself. I used a power drill and a bench grinder to fit and finish the screw head and a hack saw and a small shop vice with pad jaws to carefully cut the indexed slot and cut the screw to the right length. The result was a beautifully fitted, perfectly indexed, and fitted screw. My work at home took maybe an hour. FWIW Im not a mechanic, machinist or engineer, Im a geologist who happens to enjoy working with his hands. If you dont have such an aptitude (and not everyone does), I suggest you bite the bullet and pay the price to someone who does.

I make screws almost daily and my price is still the same as it was a dozen years age. For 100$ I can make and time your screw for you. Steve
