A friend of mine has a L.C. Smith 12 gauge. The serial number is 124XXX which puts production in 1905, and it has 00 under the serial number. It has 28" barrels and an English straight stock. However, the gun is highly engraved to the point it looks nicer than a grade 5 gun. Does anyone know why a 00 grade LC Smith would be so well engraved?

Ken:

The link worked for me.....

Your friends L.C. is not factory engraved, someone had that gun engraved with their own pattern and style, poorly done.

It's an after-market job, and doesn't resemble anything done at, or by Hunter Arms. Although that style may appeal to some, it doesn't appeal to me personally; and certainly wouldn't command any premium amongst Smith collectors. But if your friend is happy with this piece, I suppose that is all that really matters.

It's pretty obvious who did the engraving - he signed it right on the side. I can't read it that well but it looks like DC Smith.

Lots of guns were engraved, mostly in a Germanic style, in Japan in the 50s. Here are some nicer examples
