the cases I have seen for the original better quality British percussion shotguns looked to be made from some type of mahogany.

Does any one know which type of mahogany they used to make the cases?

I think a good guess would be true Cuban Mahogany.

There're so many of them, I believe it would be Swietenia mahogani.

Hi OH. If it is a Brit manufactured case having a centre round flush fitting lift up handle the timber used would be Honduras Mahogany which here in Brit land was always known as the finest Mahogany to use for gun cases.

thanks damascus

I thought that might be the right species but wanted to confirm, and luckily, one of the local wood vendors carries it.

yes looking to return this gun to a proper case, I have been gathering the accessories.

not sure what handle I will use- i have not seen a reproduction of the round flush fitting handle- but I love the looks of it

Peter Dyson in the UK carries reproduction brass fittings for cases including the handle, lock, hinges, etc. However, for the price of them, you would be better off finding a junk vintage case and re-using the brass fittings on a new build.

yes, thanks- we have done business- in fact I just got a 15 gauge wad cutter from him (The Field had a good article about him last month)

and a couple hundred pounds sterling for just the non folding handle is a little steep. If i see a cheap junk case with one I will jump on it, if someone has the handle from a scrap case let me know.

for a laugh - years ago i bought a cased percussion gun. the case had a handle in the center of the lid. An odd place for it i thought and asking for trouble if the latch hooks slip. I figured some one had added it over the years, and was going to take it off- then I learned

BTW- this is what is getting cased - not a Purdy but not too bad

In furniture circles, Cuban was indeed considered the best. If not extinct, it was rendered nearly so.
