I am looking for a donor 12-bore double with Greener crossbolt to shorten and mount rifle sights on to make a dedicated slug gun. I see a lot of affordable Merkel, Simson and Sauer doubles that have all the right features, but fear they are all lightweight upland guns. Would prefer to find something weighing closer to 8 pounds than 7. Any thoughts or advice?

Bill/Oregon,
Check out Simpson Ltd. Pick out a post war 12 ga from Fortuna or something similar. As a 16 ga man, I have a hard time believing any of these 12 ga.s are too light.

Your best deals from Simpson's will be the one's that have had a bolt run through the stock flats. I've been down there several times and looked at them. If you're prepared to do an internal staple or pin repair, some of the guns are in fairly good condition. They did have some Merkels at one time, Model eights which they still may have, but they still have quite a few post war Ernst Thalmann guns reasonably priced, and the folks over on the German board say that their quality is good. No doubt someone here will jump in and give their opinion on them.

A German OU might be closer to your weight requirement. You might want to check Blackbern's website as well.

Hello Bill,
Good luck with your search...here is another site ,I think these guys might have a bigger selection ]Blackbern guns[/url] http://757arms.com/.
Whats your plan...cast round ball or cast slugs?.or factory slugs or sabots?.
Are you going to regulate the bbls yourself?, as you prolly know, the chances of both bbls putting two big holes close together without some regulation tinkering are not that great.
I have been looking for a nice heavy English single to sleeve with a rifled bbl, to avoid the regulation issue.
Please keep us posted as to what you end up with & how it shoots...I for one am interested...good luck with the project Oregon Bill
cheers

Franc, Doverham, checking the Blackbern site as well. Was thinking of patched round balls and drams of black powder, as well as working up smokeless loads with something like Brennekes. I think that to get a Fosbury-style "cotton-spool" slug to be accurate, I would need rifled choke tubes for the paradox effect. Agree it would be pure serendipity to get an unchoked smoothbore double to spit slugs into the same space.
