Catalog says "Breechloading shotguns with outside hammers from 1870 to 1900 had an action that opened with the top lever above the wrist. The spring that actuates this lever is often broken. Has a barely visible pin."

For just about any of the regular double gunsmiths around here making a top lever spring is a common every day job.

I've got one made but I lost tension in the spring material I was using...this is a weird top lever spring in that it is .0040 thick, from beginning to end, and it is in a U shape, only 1/8" apart, with a tab that fits in a slot on the frame, and a bolt that the beginning part goes half way around. It's on an R. Grove...anyone heard of that Englishman?

Binko: It is not surprising you lost tension in the spring if you were using the annealed spring material from Brownells. Some of the stuff they have sent out lately has not been hardenable at least by techniques normally used. You need to get a fairly high carbon steel, about 1095, from a source that might supply steel for knife making. Let me know if you need help with that. Gil

A friend just had one made for his Purdey hammer gun. The guy who did the repair is here in NC.
