I don't have those dims handy but I've just shot an email to Richard B. Hoover asking him for the dims. Either he or I will respond a little later.

Thanks, I just got a 1878 e. james, that weighs 8.6 lbs, and a 12ga shell wobbles a little more than some of my other 12's. It was sold to me as a 12ga, but I'm wondering, most older 12s don't weigh nearly that much, so I'm asking the experts here?
thanks binko

Rim .835 Base .790 Mouth .782 Length 2.500? Bore .751
12 gauge bore .729
Measure the bore first and that should tell the tale.

Strange, bore is .721 both barrels, chamber is 3.15" deep, .817 dia., barrel thickness at breech, is .22, and rim is .885. According to bore, it's a 12ga...I guess?
thanks binko

Modern dimensions for a 12ga call for a minimum chamber diameter of .798" at the forcing cone with a taper of .005" per inch of chamber length. this would give a diameter at the rear of .813" for a 3" chamber. This is "Minimum", add a bit for tolerance & it sure sounds like a 12ga chamber to me. Had this gun been proofed under the old gauge marking system it would have been marked as a 13/1. 13/1 would indicate any bore that would accept a .719" gage but refuse a .729" one. not at all uncommon for a gun with a 12ga chamber.
