Why do some dealers list the price as "on request?" Is this to avoid shock to the casual browser, or to induce shock once the inquiry is made? To me, it is quite irritating!

It is to cause the buyer with lots of cash to get in contact with the seller so that a relationship can be built and if the gun advertised is not to his liking the possibility of substituting another can be tried. If you can't talk to the man with a desire the odds of selling something is greatly reduced.

I take it to mean, "You probably can't afford it." I generally don't bother asking, but I do like to look at the pics.

Perhaps.
It's a also way for a dealer to avoid revealing to the consignor how much a gun sold for....
Sell it for $30,000, tell the consignor it went for $25,000, pocket the $5,000 difference + your consignment fee...
Dealers will also feel out buyers -- especially if they don't know how much an item is worth. If they feel like you can pay a lot, they'll ask a lot and see what happens.
Total BS, in my opinion. Put a price on it. Then we'll talk about selling/buying it.

To me and my budget, POR simply means "priced outa reach".

We have hang tags on all our guns with prices, inventory number, make, model, other information and PRICE. However, for those quickly walking by at shows, we have a 3x5" card on the buttstock with PRICE and important information for ALL to see EASILY. As a result, we may sell 100 guns at the major shows.

Just a few thoughts I keep in my head when I am purchasing a new car but it also applies to a new gun or any thing else for that matter.
Never fully believe the person who is trying to sell you something, because behind every sales person there is a commission waiting. And God would not have created sheep if he did not want them sheared, though I am certainly not one!!!! When the salesman tells you the price my reply is usually I only want one not a dozen, or does that include share certificates in the business as well. These retorts usually takes the wind out of their sails a little and put them on the back foot for a second or two making the playing field a little more level.
The only lessons in my life I truly did learn from where the ones I paid for!
