Good for general cleaning but it wont remove rust other than very light surface rust that could probably be removed with alight rub with wire wool .

It is an L&R. I use exclusively for guns. I do not find that it removes rust, but when combined with the built in heater, it sure does soften it and make it easier to remove. Steve

The Lyman unit, used with that companies steel solution, does seem to remove some rust with repeated 480 second bursts and when the water is fully heated. I guess it depends how rusted, how patient you are, etc.

There's another safe and simple way to selectively remove rust from ferrous parts - that's using electrolysis. All you need is a plastic bucket, a battery charger and washing soda (not baking soda). I have removed rust from scientific instruments this way without any abrasion, surface removal or any damage to non-rusted areas.
Google "electrolytic rust removal" and you'll find a lot of detailed instructions.
But a word of caution- it will remove all oxides including blueing.
