My concern in this matter is simply one of safety. I cannot say for certain if the chamber requires a sleeve but I wanted to have somone who does this type of work render an opinion. Honing didn't correct the problem. There is only one area of pitting, but it is about the size of a quarter and fairly deep. The gun is well worth fixing if neccessary. I wonder if the pit is a result of storing shells in the chambers?

Very likely. A friend has an otherwise fine Ithaca trap gun that he stored with an aluminum snap cap in teh chamber. It has an awful area of pitting that occurred while it was stored. Probably some electrolysis happened.

What about the current snap caps and storage in the gun, what is safe?

Unless you break down for storage, which means generally storing in a case (a practice most seem to frown upon for long-term storage), then you can't take the caps out without recocking a hammerless in most configurations.

I thought you could simply put in the snap caps, close the gun, fire both barrels, remove the forend wood, remove the barrels, remove the snapcaps, put the barrels back on the action, put the foren wood back on, close the gun, and store it with uncocked.

As fishrising said, you could even just open the barrels far enough(with the forend off) to remove the snap caps and re-assemble. If you have an adult SxS(manual safety) you can open the gun past the cocked position, hold the triggers and let the hammers down as the gun is closed. Some guns will let you do this even WITH an annoying automatic safety.

Chamber sleeving is one of the things Briley in Houston does well. And their cost and turnaround appears to be very resonable. Check with Chuck Webb at Brileys. Jim Haynes
