My Holland and Holland rook and rabbit rifle which had a shot out barrel and now with a 5.6x50R liner and very accurate.
I intend to put a more in keeping scope on it when one turns up.

Elegant little thing.. Why is the sling swivel loop so far up the barrel, and none on the rear? How were they carried?

The octagonal barrel had been chopped down and threaded for a sound moderator before I got it. Its 23 inches long now. Got the gunsmith to put another H/H foresight he had tucked away on it in a new dovetail to make it look right. The front sling attachment on these little rifles were generally a fair way along the barrel as this one is.
Its got an original rear sling attachment about half way along the stock. Not a very sharp photo but with a magnifying glass you can just about make it out. I had to get the rifle out of the safe to make sure it was there.
98 New Bond St. London on the barrel.

Why on earth would anyone cut that barrel back and thread it for a silencer?

Yes, there is a rear sling mount. IMO grey wouldn´t be the best alternative for background color when taking fotos of weapons... wink

Thanks for that, it just so happens to be the colour of our carpet throughout the house.
I think I really ought to get a better quality camera as well.
Loathe to throw anything out thats still working and was top of the line when I bought it.
Anything electronic these days is outdated within weeks, although this camera is not weeks old but years.
As to why anybody would cut back the barrel you have to remember that forty or fifty years ago these rifles were just old rifles with not much monetary value. I bought a Rigby 350 square bridge magnum Mauser back in the late seventies early eighties for around two hundred and fifty pounds when I lived in England.
Including two packets of factory Ammo

Its a very elegant little piece, would it have actually been made by holland and holland though ? Or possibly made in the birmingham trade and stocked and finished by holland's ? Lovely thing either way.

Is the 5.6x50R used for big game--deer, etc.--in New Zealand?

Mike A.,
I can't answer about New Zealand deer, but on Alabama Whitetail,5.6X50R is great when loaded with 60gr Nosler Partion bullets.I shot one "point on" and was able to recover the bullet after about 24" penetration(other bullets went completely through on broadside shots),About 40cal and weighed 45grains.

Der Ami

Maybe just a bit of topic, but what velocity and what rate of twist did you use for the 60 gr. Nosler Partitions in the 5.6x50R? I am thinking of using them in a bolt action 223 and wonder if a 1 in 12 barrel would work, or if 1 in 9, or even 1 in 8 would be needed.
