Does anyone have or know where I can get info on Winchester model 70 Mannlicker rifles. I am interested in info about them and possibly purchase. Also if there was a Pre-64 Mannlicker model. My understanding is that about 2400 were made at Winchesters custom shop as model 7004 in the late sixties, but I don't know about any Pre-64 rifles.

Thanks for any response Larry.

The ones I'm aware of were post 64 sold in the late 60's. I don't believe there were any factory pre 64 Mannlichers. My recollection is that they were a standard catalog item - not a custom shop rifle. I had a friend who bought one at a closeout sale from KMart as I recall.

According to Rule's book, 2401 made from '69-'72; stock from Fajen.

My impression in handling a couple is that they're a little "clunky" (too much wood) compared to their European counterparts.

I'm sure there'll be a few at the Colorado Collector's show this weekend.

Good shooting.

Mannlicher, or Mannlicher-Shoenaur are the fine rifles, in particular the "Sweet Swede" 6.5x54 caliber- Hemingway owned many of them and used them in Africa and also on the Pilar-- Mannlickers are more likely the Monica Lewinskis of the world--Capish??

Jack O'Connor agreed. In Sheep and Sheep Hunting he wrote about one the he purchased and sent to Al Biesen, who "took off considerable excess wood from the stock, removed the Monte Carlo comb, reduced the circumference of the pistol grip, installed a solid red-rubber recoil pad, refinished, checkered, and installed a Leupold 4 x scope."
