The gun has a birds eye maple stock and is made on a 1936 Springfield 1903 action. The stamp on top center of the barrel is F. E. Hoffman I was just wondering if anyone has heard of this maker?

The FE Hoffman gun 1903 is the bottom rifle. The top is a strange Winchester model 54 30-06 with a model 70 barrel that has been renumbered to 54. It has the transitional safety of an early model 70. I was wondering if anyone knows anything about either rifle. I buy what I like but I am not an expert on bolt actions by any means.

It's hard to tell from the photos, but since the scope on the Model 54 is mounted quite low, I assume that the bolt handle has been altered to permit this. Or has someone managed somehow to fit a Model 70 bolt to a Model 54 receiver?

The gun has the standard Redfield scope mount. The cocking piece is the same as an early model seventy with the transitional safety. The bolt number and the receiver number match. It is a strange gun, it has almost all the features of a model 70 except the floor plate.

I just checked the serial numbers on the Winchester. If it is an actual 54 it was made in 1928, not possible with this type of barrel. If it is a model 70 it is made in 1938. Since the barrel is over stamped 54 over the original 70. Do you think Winchester was using up floor plates for the old 54 run? Maybe this was special ordered this way?

Maybe take off parts from a much later factory rebarreled M54 and put on the M70 ?

Many years ago at a gun show I bought what I thought was a prewar model 70. When I had a friend look at it, he commented that it was all model 70 except the action, which was for a model 54, so it must be possible to do this. As I remember it even had a model 70 bolt release. ( note below, ;<) )

I learn something every day, and a lot of times it's that what I learned the day before was wrong
