Sad news to hear, I never met him, but we had corresponded concerning his converting 2 rim fire Martinis into center fire for me. Since he had a mule it was going to be a painless no FFL hassle deal. I have always enjoyed his posts and the depth of knowledge and experience he brought to the table. While he will be sorely missed by us all, my heart goes out to his family and their loss. Thaine

Sorry to hear that Joe is no longer with us. This forum is the best thing we ever did. I have met so many people who are as interested in prewar wood and steel handmade rifles as I am. Unlike many of you, I am not a refugee from another rifle site because I am a shotgun person and had to enjoy my custom rifles by myself until this forum was created. Here's hoping that no more of us leave in 2013. Bill Murphy in MD.

I'm really sad to hear this, Joe and I have had many talks about triggers and what it takes to make a good one.
The guys on that other nameless site should hang thier heads in shame for the way they treated J. D. Steele and Ben, there both gone now and for sure will be missed. Good by Joe, hope we meet again. S-T

It's not an unnamed site it's the ASSRA site. I posted Joe's Obit over there.
About the time of all the troubles over there I left for several reasons, one was all the banning and censorship.
I am not angry with them and nether should you guys, just put all that behind you. It worked out for the best IMO as we now have this site where we can have more open discussions.
Merry Christmas and have a great New Year.

Sad news. I always enjoyed his knowledgeable posts and his straight-forward persona. He's missed.
Relax; we're all experts here.

If I saw a post by J.D. Steele it would be the my first choice to click onto. As he died two days after his last post here can I presume it was unexpected. Regards, Roly

I had some time to think about Joe these last few days. He was a heck of a great guy to me. He sold me a low wall action that became my favorite rifle, along with a lot of suggestions and advice about how to go about building it. But what I will miss most about Joe is that, while he knew and loved traditional rifles, he could also think outside of the box. He understood that what passed for "proof" of concept in shooting was hardly adequate and he was always interested to learn and try new things.
Yes, he was special indeed, and he will remain that way in my memories.

Very sad. I never met Joe in person, but we corresponded a little and did some trading. I always found him to be knowledgeable and more than fair. A good decent man gone too soon.

Oh my God. I was on a self imposed hiatus from the computer world over Christmas, and logged on five minutes ago directly to this site (my favorite, by the way). To say I'm shocked would put it mildly.
He helped me soooo much these last few years. He patiently coached me through the tribulations of fitting a set of double set triggers to a Mauser, advised me on some small Martini issues, and set me up with my current custom Krag project. He sold me a complete 1896 Krag action, and threw in a NOS bolt to boot- when I thanked him his reply was "I thought that would make you smile, grin:)". His prompt reply to my emails was a given, and I was perplexed by his non-reply to my last one. Now I know.
I bid you a tearful R.I.P., Joe.
