I am wondering if the ultra sonic case cleaning method could be used on engraved receivers to clean the dirt and whatever from the engraving and aid in shining up the un-engraved areas. Would it damage any case hardening colour?

They are routinely used for cleaning jewlery so I would think so.

With kind regards,

They are very good I use one all the time for gun actions and parts. Just use a strong house hold cleaner in it. It brings up the colour hardening very well.

If you can't afford an ultra sonic cleaner try a Birchwood Casey lead rag. Does a great job of cleaning nickel, chrome, and other bright finishes. I do not know about using it on color case. Kreighoff recomends it for their bright finished guns.

Ultrasonics cannot in themselves damage metallic surfaces; if the medium chosen is inappropriate they might, but that would happen in any case regardless of the ultrasonic input. All an ultrasonic bath can do is remove impacted dirt and surface adherent muck, and it's very good at doing it.

Common or garden clothes washing detergent dissolved in warm water is quite adequate for everyday purposes, and won't damage any case colours; nor will it add any shine, just remove crap.

Here's one that's cheap:

http://www.harborfreight.com/25-liter-ultrasonic-cleaner-95563.html

There is a 20% off coupon on their homepage bringing it to $60.

This is the SAME cleaner machine as re-labeled for hornady and Lyman as a brass cleaner.

Rookhawk,

Great link. Can't seem to find the coupon however.

Cheers,
David

as others have said, with the appropriate cleaner, you have nothing to worry about... don't use something like CLR or toilet bowl cleaner and you should be good to go... my wood smith runs my receivers through one every time I send him some work... he has the wood off anyways so its a great time to clean out the 100+ years of gunk...two things... you will need to lubricate your action again afterwards for sure... also, your gun may have been functioning with some of that gunk as part of the works...if the gun has not been reasonably cleaned in a LONG time, don't be surprised if the trigger pulls are harder, lever is slightly offset, etc

After the cleaning what is a recommendation for removing the cleaning solution and re-lubing the internal parts?
