In Finland we call this big fowl bird as "Metso" (Tetrao Urogallus). It has been very common in Finland and Sveden but nowadays the population is going down. In my younghood I shot 3 such birds.

About 60 years ago the state of Wisconsin tried to introduce them here. I believe the plants were made on the Apostle Islands, sorry that it did not work. So long ago I don't remeber why it failed.

Igorrock, I think that the Black Grouse you show is why I asked for help in identifying the bird I took pictures of in Sweden. To the unfamiliar eye the Capercaillie and Black Grouse look quite similar. I believe Lagopus published , on this board, some beautiful pictures of a Black Grouse. My pictures are apparently of Capercaillie.
