But Joe is right (for once :D) and the barrels should be gripped in front of the splinter (of course not wrapping your hand around them!)

If you look at the pictures of the two guys in the the first post they are both sort of chunky and have short, stout arms. Their arms wouldn't comfortably reach the barrels.

I think George Digweed has the same problem but it certainly hasn't hampered his shooting.

I am tall with long arms (used to be skinny) and reach the barrels with ease with my left hand. A surprising number of guys will come up to me and "correct" the way I hold my shotgun. These are usually the pump-gunners.

Actually jOe is right more often than not, what gets him in trouble is his typically harsh criticism and need to find fault (as in nit-picking). I do admire his ability to pack a punch in such few words.

A.B. Frost 1901; leading hand lightly cradling the barrels just past the splinter FE as if holding eggs. A moderate forward lean and neck extension. Comb firmly placed beneath the cheek bone (zygomatic arch.) Strong grip with right hand.
Works for me, on those rare occasions when the setter on point and I fortuitously intersect in the same 640 smile

I agree with this. I shoot better if I grab the barrels ahead of the splinter. I have an almost equal eye dominance. My large left hand obscured the bead from my left eye. I do not need an ocluder with a SXS but must use one on an O/U.
