No information, but I like that coarse but precise checkering. Looks like it would actually help you keep hold of that little fella, even with gloves on an icy mountain. Great find!
BTW: Welcome to the board; nice folks here and amazing expertise! (They even tolerate those of us whose main contribution is drool....)

No info, but enjoy the rifle and am always impressed with these resurrecting combs! I try to imagine how and when they were installed. Do you have the scope? Planning on one? I don't think Papa ever used a scope on his, but he sure contributed to this rifle's ultimate class!

I appreciate the comments. The seller has the scope (Hensoldt) & claw rings but is having trouble finding them. I have my fingers crossed that he can locate them as fabricating new ones would probably cost me what I have in this rifle!
Funny that you mention EH, it was "Hemingway's Guns" that re-ignited my search for an '03 carbine and ultimately led to finding this one.

Good thing you got it before the rush is on!! And Make the seller aware of how much you want the scope, replacement is just as you say... How was the book? I wasn't impressed with the Beretta excerpt.

I'm pestering him as much as I can without making him hate me!
The book was generally good- I enjoyed the period photos but a friend who is a real Hemingway aficionado had some issues with the accuracy of the text.
The rifle has some pretty serious pitting on the barrel & front sight base so the question is whether to refinish. I'm not worried about collector value as I'll likely never sell it but I do hate to tamper with history. I think a proper restoration would make for a nice little rifle but I'm still undecided. The bore looks great & the headspace is tight so mechanically, it's in great shape.

A conscientious gunsmith might just remove the pitting and rust blue the barrel. This is the rifle Bill Ruger tried to copy.
BTW: Welcome to our little conclave... KWood. Best, Steve

Kwood, If you can send the serial number to me I can let you know if it came through Von Lengerke & Detmold and when. Not all of the M-S's that they imported had the VL&D name on them. In the early 1920's only about 80% were so marked. research@griffinhowe.com
