Great! Everything looks fine, from here anyway...
Galazan guard will have a different thread, possibly metric?

I found the Galazan guard had a different thread...The stub can be replaced with a section of 10-32. I also found it was narrower than the bottom tang of the Fox I had in hand. Had I continued, I would have had to file the tang narrower in order to hide it under the guard. The bow is wider and not very "Foxy"....aesthetics.

As to lengthening the originals, the best job I've seen had cut the tail off very close to the back of the bow. The more common approach is to cut less off. This puts the weld joint smack in the middle of the tang and discrepancies in color are more obvious.

Good luck with the project, hope to see some pics soon.
Great price, if you can manage to get all that work done for $900.
On this side of the pond, that would not pay for the stock...

Steve,

the Galazan guard I keep is a Parker replacement, perhaps it is another can of worms. So it would mean back to square one. Straight or semipistol that is the question.

Mike Covington,

what grade is(was) your Fox?

Mike Campbell,

very useful commentary.

Thanks to all,

Here are some "before" pictures.

Comments on Refurbisment/Customisation 6000 miles South.

The Chilean market is small as regard to second-hand shotguns, in addition most shotguns of good old makes are of low grade (Mostly basic Win 21s, VHE Parkers or AE Foxes; same applies to European/British BLs or SLs). Most have been overused or plainly abused.
Good gunsmiths or stockmakers are scarse, overburdened and lacking in specialisation. There are some barrel assemblers but no barrelmakers. Springs, extractors and the like are obtainable locally though. Good engravers are even less common.
Given these limitations, most refurbishments go very little beyond simple lock repairs or stock replacements. This time we aim to go a little further, including the services of a local engraver.

Regards,

EJSXS
