Sauer drilling made in 1942. Rifled barrel 8x57JR ruined by 2 drilled holes. Is any modern method available to fix/restore it?

I doubt if a safe repair can be made as this appears to be close to the chamber area. Do you happen to know the circumstance under which some idiot would bore these holes? Jim

During USSR period there are just few groups of people could own rifled guns: commie bosses, military high staff, proffi hunters, native Russians at Far East and Far North who hunted for living. The rest of people had to bring rifled barrels they owned or found to police for desroing them or for de-activating (drilling, overboring or filling up with melted lead). This drilling liberated from Germany is one of them.

Could the holes be tapped and plugs screwed in with Lock-tite, then drill out the plugs where they pass through the bore and re-rifle where they pass through the rifling grooves. It might work, the holes are not that far down the barrel from the firing chamber. Steve

Using one of those .22 LR or .22 Hornet inserts might be worth a try. Lothar Walther and others make them.

It might work, the holes are not that far down the barrel from the firing chamber. Steve My thoughts were the following. To use plugs made from ceramics. Then TIG welding the holes. Then rifling fixed areas. But I don't know would it work, maybe Chuck got some ideas?

Geno,
It may be possible to weld the holes and line the barrel with something like the .243, .250-Savage, .270, etc. Or perhaps instead of a liner, a long barrel insert could be made.
