Thanks Adam. Sorry I missed it the 1st time.

Sig made the New Englander for LL Bean.

Larry, you're slipping. Must be late where you are, so we'll cut you some slack on this one. Sig imported the LL Bean New Englander and, as Don Moody indicated, it was made by one of the Rizzinis. I'm pretty sure the Bean gun was from B. Rizzini, same as the SA5 field guns (the ones with side plates). The Sig SA3 and the SA5 Sporting (no side plates) were manufactured by I. Rizzini (F.A.I.R.). I think the second generation Sig Rizzinis were all from B. Rizzini.

Looks like CSMC has a Bean 28 availabe now with 28" bbls, weight listed at 6-3:

One good thing about owning a Ruger 28 is that I'm not even tempted by the Bean gun. A baby frame Beretta would be another story.

Beretta currently makes three frame sizes for the 680 guns: 12-gauge, 20-gauge, and the "baby frame" (28-gauge and .410). According to an older Michael McIntosh gun review, the Beretta baby frame 680 28-gauge is 7/64-inch shallower than a standard 20-gauge 680 frame and 1/32-inch narrower at the knuckle. The width of Beretta 680 frame is largely dictated by the amount of steel required around the locking pins. Thus, there is relatively little difference in overall width. However, the side-mounted locking pins allow the Beretta to be one of the shallowest frames available per gauge.

You can get 28-gauge barrels on any 680 series gun but the baby frame guns are available on the 687 Silver Pigeon III and higher grades. Keep in mind that Beretta seems to change their model names and configurations on a monthly basis.

Some very light OU's achieve that weight reduction by using an alloy receiver with a steel insert in the breech face. I don't think Beretta does that. My 687 28ga is all steel.

Replacement, you're right. I goofed on that one. The gun was imported and marketed by Sig, with some of them branded for LL Bean, but they were made by B. Rizzini. I think those Auroras are probably some of the better deals out there in OU's.

Agreed, but the SA5 may have been an even better deal. CDNN closed them out at $1199 in 12 and 20, and I got one of each. Screaming deal.

If you can find a Savage Milano at a reasonable price, it may be worth considering.

I'm with KYJohn and others: a Ruger Red Label 28 is a practical choice, especially if you intend to hunt birds with the gun, not just look at it or shoot clays. I've heard "they don't hold up to serious clay shooting." They DO hold up to the amount of shooting just about any American hunter is going to get in a lifetime. And the 28" barrel version swings better than many 28s.

(Oh, and a further novelty: it's made in the USA. That in itself makes it a "rare gun" these days!).

Franchi: I don't know if this will work for you or not, but I have a brand new in-the-box Huglu/Armsco 28 gauge over & under that has 28 inch barrels with five screw in invector chokes. All paperwork is included. This gun was imported in 2004 by Thad Scott. Price is $1,200.00 shipped to you.
