The following link to a local news story on last weekends opener for resident hunters is posted for those planning to hunt early season SD pheasants. You may want to consider postponing your trip, if possible, until later in the season or at least contact your hosts for local conditions. I am going back to the eastern part of the state for this weekends opener, but don't expect much success until weather conditions allow the farmers to get some of these crops harvested. I'm here in Huron now. After two days of hunting a group of about 17-18 hunters/family, we have only 10 birds to show for it. We are hunting about 8 miles southwest of Huron on private, family owned property. This is the worst openner I've seen in this area since starting to hunt Huron 20 yrs ago. Other hunters in the hotel we stay at had similar stories.

Chuck, Tough news and hard to believe based on how it has been the last few years. We originally planned to be in Huron next weekend, but after hearing how far behind the harvest is, we decided to wait till Nov. 12-15. Don't know if that will be enough time for the harvest to get done, but my son has a couple days off school that week which meant a couple extra days afield for us. Good luck with the rest of your SD hunt. Hope to cross paths with you out there one of these years. Jim

Jim, I think you'll be better off than we were.
Not surprisingly, for the second yr in a row, the business at the Crossroads Hotel was way down. I'm guessing about 50% capacity.

Here in NW Kansas, we started to get some dryland corn off this week, and test cut some milo. BUT its going to rain and snow tommorrow through Friday, so that stops that. Irrigated corn, I am guessing ,wont come off until mid November..Good news, we are getting some pretty good Mallard counts, so Duck Hunting next couple of days...thers always a bright side!
