Dick, a fifties vintage Custom Built gun would have a rounded frame and a different checkering pattern. Paul's gun is most likely a special order 20 Gauge Magnum model, which was a standard catalog item, not a custom order gun. The vent rib and 28" barrels would be special order features of the standard catalog gun. I would be very surprised if it has engine turning on the flats and a rib inscription. However, on occasion, Winchester would build a gun on a standard non rounded frame with Custom Built features in the period after the Deluxe Grades were discontinued. I think the serial number is way too high to be a Deluxe marked gun.

I certainly agree with your conclusion but I was trying to be complete on what versions are out there, whether a custom order of a stock 20 gauge Magnum, Deluxe, Custom Built or Custom Shop gun.-Dick

A 20br with BTFE, VR, 3" chambers plus FULL/FULL choke all in one piece? I would say there is only one F/F out there, yours. Most folks would order 1/4-3/4 or similar and just shoot from the hip if they wanted that extra challenge.
Congratulations on ownership of VERY desirable Olinchester shotgun.

Full and Full was the standard catalog offering for the 20 Gauge Magnum model. I would love to have one, would trade a skeet gun for it.

I had a 30in 20 ga Mdl 21 magnum. Took it hunting and missed about a box worth over two days of birds. Great on clays, but bad for me on birds. Sold it and got a 28in mod, full 20 ga mdl 21. Killed 10 quail first time out. Good decision for me.

Here are some more pics. I was actually a little hesitant to post until it was paid for. It was a closet Winchester. I will have to get a letter on it to see if the family story is true. Thank you all for your help. Paul [img][/img]

I have Mod 21 20ga, 28" imp cyl/mod and it has 2 3/4 & 3 on bbl. The 3 is not part of the roll stamp but looks like it was done at the factory. Gun was completed 6/27/55

In the barrel picture you can see the barrels were made in 54. That does not mean the gun was made then just the barrels.

Again, enjoy it and use it as we do ours.

You do indeed have what was cataloged in the 1950's as a 20 Magnum Model 21 with the added features of Vent Rib and non-standard barrel of 28" down to the original butt plate which was standard. There are 123 of these guns according to Schwing and Winchester records. They are a seperate group from any other 20 gauge 3" Model 21's to a collector.
A truly magnificant gun! Resist the urge to install a recoil pad and leave the gun all original. Have the choke constrictions professionally measured. Get some Kent TM and go shoot some ducks! I have only seen a few of these and yours is one.-Dick

Beautiful and rare 21. Maybe I was a bit hasty on knocking a full, full 20. Can I try one again? Great find. JW
