I was asking because in a catalog from time before Great War there are two o/u shoguns, one sidelock and one boxlock. It’s stated that (one or both of them) was created 1905. A similar sl gun is showed in a A. J. Defourny catalog from the 30s. Here is a link to what it looks like http://gun-vault.com/defourny.htm

Perhaps it was this creation that got other manufactures (before Great War) to develop and manufacture o/u shotguns? Perhaps it was somebody else creation? If so, who’s?

I guess that the connection might be that Brancquaert bought parts from Defourny (and possible from others) who they made up guns from.

Gettemans,

Definitely a pigeon gun, big fences, side clips, raised rib with a mark where the mid bead use to be, and the extra weight, of course.
I'll see if can fully assess what it needs to be restored.

Bodson, I can confirm that the O/U sidelock was a creation of Defourny himself.Sometimes we see these O/U in auctions and maybee this is a coincident but there is just one for sale also in the next Holt's sale. If you want to bid on it it is lot Nr 1628

The gun on Littlegun has barrels by Joseph Cape, another Belgian maker. Defourny seems to have been involved with many other makers over the years. Marc can correct me if I am mistaken, but I believe he held several patents.

I have one listing that describes Brancquaert as "A maker of luxury guns". Apparently he never registered a trade mark. He is listed as being in operation circa 1905.

Another Brancquaert was sold by Christies.

Thank you Marc for the confirmation, and information about the one on Holts auction. No, I will not bid.
Looking in both catalogs yesterday evening, it was the boxlock who was stated to be created 1905, this both in the Branquart and Defourny catalogs. Guess the sidelock come one or few year later.
Here is a link to a similiar boxlock gun, it's nr 50, http://www.littlegun.be/arme%20belge/artisans%20identifies%20d/a%20defourny%20gb.htm

Just to add, there is a brief story in the Summer 1993 issue of Double Gun Journal about a matched pair of 16ga sidelocks by Brancquaert, the guns being made in the early 1900s. The story notes they sold for 600 in 1975 but had gone up in value by a considerable amount since then. They are very nice looking guns indeed.
