I'm about to inherit this J.P. Sauer SxS. I'm wondering if any here can help me to identify it or figure out its approximate value.

Here's What I know

J.P. Sauer and Sohn.
Made in Germany. I think 1963?
12 Guage, 2 3/4" , Full Choke / Half Choke
Serial # 286XXX

I know some of the pics aren't great.

The barrel is over 90%, perfect bluing, shiny bore. Action locks tight. Stock in good shape, ~80%, no major dings or dents. Has woodland scene on side of case, original, no rust. (Don't know if I should clean it or not, has some tarnish)

Hope you folks can help me out.

Thanks

Final proof for Nitro on a multi-tube longarm in Ulm in July of 1963. I was trying to recall but it may be that the effort at Oberndorf am Neckar was transferred to Ulm post 1939? It was in 1952 that a proofhouse was established at Eckernförde(some subset of Kiel and possibly at Sauer facility??) in the locale of the new settlement of Sauer & Sohn. Any chance of an image of the marks further on the tube near the forend hanger?

Kind Regards,

Raimey

Looks a lot like the Sauers that Stoeger was importing in the '60s. Very solid reliable plain boxlocks; a good value at the time. I had a 16 very much like your 12, with 27+" metric-length barrels, same chokes as yours. For some reason I could break clay birds well with it but not feathered birds....

It is always worth less if you are the seller, and more if you are the buyer...

That makes sense Mike- the general meaning of the German script as best I can read it with the flash glare is: Special order steel- Consumers Association--this was way after WW2 and may have been used for shotguns imported by Stoeger on special order--

Run With the Fox, wrong again: Spezial Laufstahl Bochumer Verein = special barrel steel by the (company) Bochum Association. Bochumer Verein was a concern consisting of coal mines, steelworks and so on, based in the city Bochum, Ruhr area.
The American market is different, but here in Germany such guns go for Euro 350.-, about US$ 470.-

Danke- I couldn't make out the middle word with the flash glare- Special barrel Steel-- can be LaufStahl-- can also be Fabstahl- the word lauf has many meanings in the German language- and barrel is one of them--at least we agree with the last word- that clearly means association/organization. Wrong again you say- Scheissekuchen mein fruend- I'm wrong all the time, but as long as I am not running for political office or asking you for a loan, "Machts nicht"!!

If this gun is in excellent mechanical condition, I would expect the US price to start just shy of $1000 and it might fetch quite a bit more--"under $1000" for a NEW gun buys you just about only Chinese, Brazilian and Turkish these days. NOT German or any other Euro-made gun.

I suspect my sense of decent prices may be 'way under the market; I'm a cheap ba----rd and am always thinking "What would I pay for this?" Usually turns out to be 'way less than somebody else is willing to pay....

If I am correct this gun is in Canada. The market for old doubles here generally isn't as strong as the US.. I would be placing a Canadian value of around $800.00 if in very nice condition and that may take some doing. But, I have been wrong before!

How different is this from the ones offerred on Blackbern website. You should be able to judge condition and pricing echoing theirs...Steve
