A while back I inquired about recommendations for reboring work. I had a high wall barrel in some 22 center fire caliber rebored to 405 WCF by JES. The turn around time was short, the barrel looks great, and it shoots close to MOA. These guys are the real thing.

So, how many groves did you have him do? I'm considering 3 for a 9.3x62 Rem. 760 project.

Having had a .32 WSPL turned into a .38-55 (four grooves), I would recommend that you make substantial jumps in caliber, if you go this route. .32 to .375 (modern .38-55) was not enough.

He did a 3-groove on my .30-30 to .356 Win. project. I queried him ahead of the game regarding 3-groove vs. 4-groove and was told it wouldn't matter in the shooting. The rifle now bored, shoots very well indeed and I am quite pleased. There will be more work headed his way when I get a couple more ducks in a row.

Brent, Some years ago I had JES bore a 9x57 Mauser to 9.3 without ant problem. Are you saying your .32 didn't clean up at.357?

It really depends on the condition of the lands as to how well a smaller over bore will work. If the lands are in good shape then a slight increase will turn out well. But if the lands aren't great then the size needs to be enough increase to remove issues with the original lands and then cut new grooves, or recut the old grooves deeper.

.32 Special did not clean up to .375 (modern .38-55). This was totally obvious with a good bore scope. The new rifling and bore was pretty rough. Attempting to smooth with fire lapping did not help much. Finally relined.

I'd think the bore of a .375 barrel would be somewhere around .365/.366". That bore would easily eliminate any remanants of the interior of a .32 Special barrel. I think the combination of steel qualities, tooling and technique didn't quite work out in that particular barrel. Chances are if everything was repeated at a larger bore, the result would be the same.

Maybe that shop specializes in 35 caliber barrel making, and that's their comfort zone, but most of these shops will just say they can't cut some barrels as clean and smoothly as others. I believe reboring's a good option for a selective project or two, with the possibilty that it doesn't work out. I know many lining and full rebarrel projects that didn't live up to hopes.

For the record, they cut up to, at least, .458.
