and he put up more pictures on the listing.
It looks like it has some pre-war features, it might be worth
a discussion.
270 Mauser sporter
The 270 has been around since the mid 1920s and from what I see I think the rifle may be from the period pre WWII. Just my thought based on a couple of things. The barrel appears to be drilled for scope blocks and I gather that was an early feature prior to reliable (for the era) receiver mounted scopes. I suspect the side mount and abomination of a bolt handle were added later. I would hope the seller includes the swivels with it if it doesn't hit his BIN price to include the sling. Anyone know what SR action that is?

the .270 is a cartridge that is too high of pressure for a small ring Kar in my eye.
That bolt may not be pretty, but I'd guess the owner wanted something large enough for cold weather that he could easily grasp with heavy gloves on. More of a hunting rifle than a safe queen.
When I saw that bolt, I wondered if it was for a customer that got their fingers, or glove, hung up on the rear sight.
Still in all, replace the bolt handle, fill/polish errant screw holes, replace (or not) the Savage butt plate and one would have a decent Mauser hunting rifle.
.270 too much for a KAR 98? Maybe so if a steady diet of near-max loads were in the cards, but were it mine I would simply load up some mild ammo and use it.
I'm wondering if the action it's built on may have been a Turk 1903.
Those are LR but use a SR shank Mauser Bbl.
The front ring is a bit longer than the standard Mauser IIRC,,maybe not. It looks that way in the pics to my less than Mauser knowledged eye,
Most seen around now have the back edge of the front ring notched for loading,,but when orig mfg'rd, they were not notched.
The LR w/ SR Bbl shank was a somewhat popular project to grind the LR down and make a SR action out of them.
IIRC most of the 1903 Turks had no markings on the left outside wall so you didn't have to go chasing after those if you wanted them gone. None on the rifle in question anyway.
The other thing I think I see is the high charger clip bridge. That was a feature of the '03 Turk,,also the 09 Peruvian action. Probably a few others.
The recv'r sight seems to sit awfully high over the top of the charger bridge reinforcing my thought.
The bolt release on those has a curved extended arm that applies spring pressure to the charger clip when in place to hold it there. Can't quite tell if it's there or not in the pics either.
With all that,,those small proof marks or what ever they are on the left side of the front ring would have to have been applied after a LR was ground to a SR. I don't recognize them but they do look like a Gov't type mark.
So maybe my theory of a modified Turk action is all wet.!
Fun to speculate anyway,,not much else to do.
Seems like a decent rifle, with some work it could come to life.
Not in love w/ the 270 cal personally.
The SR doesn't scare me,, Unless they made a SR from a LR that used a standard LR Bbl!,,
I'd just feed it carefully. But there are other calibers I'd choose before that.

Unless my memory fails me the Kar 98 SR has LR threads. You mentioned the 09 Peruvian, It also has small thread, but a longer receiver ring. The Small thread actions are great to use Rem.700 takeoff barrels. When the Rem thread is turned to diameter, you can see traces of the old thread, but is goes away when chasing the Mauser thread. To use one in a large thread action, most people cut the threads off and turn what is left to diameter, leaving a funny looking shank.

Why fill the extra holes? They look like Griffin and Howe side mount spacing. Install a G&H side mount.
I picked this rifle up about 2 1/2 years ago cause the price was right ($145.00 Canadian shipped as seen in the pics). It is built on a K98 action with a barrel chambered in .270.
I don't now a whole lot about Mausers. If you can tell from the pics, is this a short ring model?
I am actually quite pleased with the rifle.
