This is a start on another Alex Henry. Thanks to tools fixtures and the experience of the previous 2 rifles, I am actually becoming somewhat efficient at this! Because this one is for me, I have been working on it between other projects for the past 6 months or so.
Not keeping track of time but a guess is something just over 100 hrs.
Breech block hole was cut with a wire EDM and the extractor mortise was done with an EDM sinker. This one will be in .450 3 1/4. Still need to finish the lever, shaping details on the action body, and finish the breech block by completing firing pin assembly. Then on to making the lock before any wood chips fall.
Couldnt figure out how to post direct links for the pictures so you will need to click on each link.

This is pretty cool!

On what are you going to use a .450 3 1/4" ?

What part of building a rifle from scratch do you find the most fun?

Brent,
I hear you were up in my neighborhood recently but no visit?
The 450 is a pretty standard chambering and Krieger is making 450/458 barrels. AH#2 was a .500 3" and is a hateful thing to shoot but it matches the customers double rifle.
What's fun? Trying to figure out how the original makers did the work....I even bought a microscope to study tool marks for the hints they give.

Jim are you going to do it as a back action lock or maybe something different and do it as a Bar Lock action (Commonly known as a Bar-in-metal action)?

Lynn,
No, this will be another standard c.1880 rifle with a B/A lock.

Yes, Jim, I was in a hurry to get up there and do some practice shooting so I did not have time to stop, unfortunately. I was worried that we would get rained out out again and lose opportunity to get lead down range. I think I must be a rain-jinx for that range. It always rains when I go there. But next time, I'll stop by. That rifle will be fun to see as it progresses.

I hope your deer season is profitable this year.

Thanks Jim and good luck it will be interesting to watch progress unfold. Hopefully you may have it to bring by the Heritage show next spring.
If I may, for a future build you may want to consider a B-in-M version as having the lock spring forward requires solving some interesting engineering challenges, to make it all fit and work correctly.

Here is mine in 40-65.
Also hole made by EDM

Lovely work Jim. Where can i ask, did you get the drawings or plans for the action ?

Bonny,
I use an actual antique rifle for reference. A friend (now deceased) knew Wal Winfer and they compiled dimensional material for standard (450) actions and larger .500 actions. Actually the actions are fairly simple but I don't think it would be possible to make one without a real action for reference. Plans or drawing would need to be VERY elaborate.
