Niedner – Shelhamer – Winchester Model 1885 High Wall

Caliber: .32-40; 28” round barrel with excellent bore; close-coupled double-set triggers; custom pistol grip stock by Tom Shelhamer.

This rifle has a long Alaskan heritage … Ken Tozer … John Wills … Michael Petrov and me (May, 2014 to now).

The Niedner Barrel is No. 623 and was made in approx. July, 1928 (source: Michael Petrov note). The barrel is otherwise unmarked. The Niedner Rifle Corporation barrel marking began in 1930.

The custom pistol grip stock is by Tom Shelhamer (source: Michael Petrov note). Tom Shelhamer went to work for Niedner’s in 1924. The stocks have a horn forend tip and grip cap (the grip cap is chipped). The steel, shotgun-style buttplate is engraved and checkered. There are two 1” diameter holes approx. 6” long drilled in the buttstock (only visible when you remove the buttplate) to reduce weight.

The front barrel sight is a sporting rifle ramp with Marbles blade. There is no rear barrel sight. The upper tang of the action shows evidence of a tang sight in its past, but there wasn’t any sight when I bought it. The rifle has a JW Fecker scope (power unmarked).

This rifle has a large shooter’s kit that has been assembled over its history. Michael eventually put it in a SEMCO Sportsman’s box. The accessories include …

Exceptional Rifle! Very fairly priced, a bargain for a shooter!
Boy, do I have a place for that one in my gun cabinet,

What's the gizmo in the barrel of the scope, between the mounts? It looks like a Unertl but I've never seen one like that. I'm guessing that it replaces the front focus. Oops, I see it's a Fecker.
The scope is a Fecker and the "gizmo" is the parallax adjustment. Fecker manufactured a wide range of optical instruments, including astronomical telescopes. Unertl got his start working for the Fecker company.
That is one pretty rifle Joe. I am sure you have enjoyed caring for it the last few years. I hope the new owner does the same and keeps the history intact. That would be a joy to shoot.
