A neighbor just stopped me to say his brother had lost the magazine to this .22 training rifle. He can't find a replacement on line. Would appreciate any advice you might have. Thank you.

Hard to find, there is one on E-bay right now with a day left to go, bidding is up to 98.00.

When I was in graduate school at the University of Illinois in 1968, I took my Springfield MII to the indoor rifle range. The Army sergeant in charge told me that I could not shoot my rifle on the range. When I inquired why not, he said that the backstop would not stand up under the cartridges fired from my rifle.

I showed him the rifle and he had obviously never seen an MII before. He looked it over carefully, then removed the magazine and examined it.

"So that's what those things were for," he said. He went on to say that he had found a whole drawer full of such magazines, but since they fit nothing in the armory, he threw them all away.

There are 3 different types of magazines for the 1922, 1922M1, 1922MII and M2 rifles. IIRC, they are not interchangeable, so you should check both rifle & magazine for compatibility. Brophy's 1903 Springfield book has the details.

About 5 years ago, I was shooting my M2 in league competition and had the magazines on my watch list. Genuine replacement magazines were hard to find and went for about $120. Someone was making replacement magazines out of some sort of polymer. At the time, the polymer magazines sold for $35 to $45. IIRC, SARCO was selling the replacement magazines.

I have seen polymer magazines for the Kimber 22 conversions of the 1911 Colt with the same packaging as the polymer M2 magazines. They appeared to be made by the same manufacturer. Maybe you can get a lead by looking for the pistol magazines.

Thanks for the very useful information. I'll pass it along.
