I collect old books about rifles. That's much cheaper than collecting the rifles themselves. Sometimes I even read the books. In "Practical Dope on the .22", Fred Ness (p. 128, last paragraph) makes reference to 2 G&H rifles in .219 Zipper. One is a Winchester Model 70 and the other is a Savage Model 40. On p. 273, Ness mentions a G&H conversion of a M1 (1922) Springfield to .22-3000 Lovell and refers to a G&H magazine for the .22-3000 Lovell cartridge, perhaps marketed separately.

These were Depression-era conversions, and I assume that G&H did about anything reasonable just to keep the doors open. Michael, can you (or anyone else) tell us more about these odd rifles?

G&H converted 1922 Springfields to .22-Hornet and did at least one in .22-3000 Lovell (not R-2). It was a lot of work to convert the 1922, clip feed to a magazine rifle and they did a super job of it. I've seen many converted to .22-Hornet (Mark Benenson did an article in Gun Digest on them) and one in .25-20SS.

Is there any information on the G&H Savage Model 40 converted to 219 Zipper? I owned an ordinary Model 40 once and never saw the need for keeping it.

In my G&H database I have over 700 rifles and one Savage Model 40 in 219 Zipper. There was no work-order number assigned to in and in a G&H list of used rifles (circa 1938) they say it was remodeled by them, whatever that means.
