Anybody here ever tried .45 LC cartridges in a .410 S x S ? If so, were the results as bad as I would assume they would be from an unrifled bore?

How about Brenneke .410 slugs?

The .45/.410 combo barrels are specifically made over-bore to accommodate the .454 bullet that the .45 colt carries.

Any .410 that is safe to shoot .45 Colt in will be specifically marked ".45/.410".

Do not fire .45 Colt in any .410 not marked for it.

The Brenneke slugs produce more muzzle energy than standard pressure .45 Colt anyway.

Never had any dealings with these type guns.

I looked at the chamber dims and where the .410 round measures .478" the .45 LC measures ..480". Are the chambers also cut slightly oversized on the .45/.410 guns to accommodate that?

Was watching a video about the Pedersoli replica of the Ithaca Auto and Burglar .45 LC/.410, with rifled bores, and just got to wondering about the combination, and how it is accommodated in the same gun.

Stan,
All chambers are cut larger than the maximum dimensions of the intended cartridge. Manufacturing tolerances of cartridges and chambers often result in a nominally larger cartridge entering a nominally smaller chamber.

Don't forget the forcing cone. It brings the bore down to .410. And then there's the choke, which necks it down even more.....

The .45 Colt has a .454" bullet. That's a difference of 44 thous. That's twice the difference in size between a .223 and a .243, and you'd never consider trying to send a 6mm bullet down a .223 bore!!!

The .45/.410s, they have an honest-go-God rifled .454 bore (and a whole lot of freebore leading up to the rifling when you are shooting .45 Colt), and then you stick that choke on the end to stop the wad from spinning and choke it down into a decent pattern as it exits the bore. Think of it as "overboring" like people sometimes pay a lot of money for.

Honestly, with everything but the Raging Judge Magnum only being rated for standard pressure .45 Colt, and the greater muzzle energy you get from the Brenneke slugs, I think that about the only reason to own a .45/.410 is so you can have a pistol-sized .410 without it being classified as an AOW and registered with our friends at the BATFE.

I was not aware that a rifled gun, chambered and recommended for .45 LC/.410, had choke. How much choke do they have? What is the difference between choking down (swaging) a slug at the forcing cone and choking it down (swaging) it at the choke, other than the pressures being much lower at the choke area of the bore?

They have a screw-on choke, with straight rifling. The choke keeps the shot from slinging out into a donut because of the wad spinning. Then you have to take it off to shoot .45 Colt.

That's the bigger guns, anyway. The short revolvers and stuff have no choke and no wad-despinner, making them basically worthless for anything more than shooting snakes IMO (which you could do just as well with a .44 or .357 shot cartridge).

That whole deal is a solution in search of a problem, IMO, without one that will safely shoot .454 Casull or .460, because then you could have a big-game and small-game gun all in one. But .45 Colt, why???

(Edit: To be fair, I think there is a 14" T/C single-shot .45/.410 pistol with the screw-on straight choke that's safe for .45 Colt +P "TC/Ruger only" loads, but it's the only one I know of.)

I have a contender so chambered. The accuracy with a 45 colt is poor (5-8”) @ 25yards. I suspect it’s because the bullet tilts in the long ride to the forcing cone. There was something on the web about using blown out 9.3 x 74 cases to illuminate the gap but I’ve never tried it. I typically our use of the contender for 410 only.

Dave,
You might try 444 Marlin cases, they work well in my 410 pistol, loaded with polishing media for carpenter bees. They might work with bullets(45cal) in the Contender. Never try this in regular 410 intended for shot. If a 444 loaded with 45 bullet won't chamber, try seating the bullet "out" with lube groove exposed and running loaded case into 444 sizing die, to bottom of bullet. This approximates heeled bullet and works well in my 43 Mauser with .452" barrel( cast bullets only).

There is a pretty good article about reloading for this combination in the current issue of The Backwoodsman magazine.

A friend gave me an issue for my birthday last week, and I found the article in it.

i have S&W Governor in the 45/.410 chambering. I have used it to qualify on the range for concealed carry using both 45 LC and ACP with half moons. At the minimal ranges used for CC qualification mine shoots exactly where I aim it, but I have no idea what is would do even at 25 yards of more. I have not shot .410 in it but have seen the films and it seems like the perfect snake gun for camping or backpacking.

I don't know much, but my grade school diploma is framed above my desk. What don't I understand about a .410 at .408 to .409 bore diameter and a .454 diameter of a 45 Colt bullet? I don't think you guys are thinking right. Oh, what the heck, go ahead and do it.

Stan, as you can see DO NOT try a .45 in a 410...I use with some good success a .41 pistol bullet glued to a BPI "410 Stump" wad that is over a nitro card using LiL Gun powder. Yes I use Magtech brass and use a 38-55 die to put a crimp on them. BTW all Rocky Mountain Cartridge in Wyoming is closing their doors, so I you want some brass that will literally last a lifetime, get your orders in ASAP

I have an early 20th century H & R single shot smooth bore .410 shotgun marked for 44-40 Shot, 44 Shot and 44XL that I understand were sort of the forerunner to the 410, at least in the U.S. It was always shot with 410 shotgun shells altho it is not so marked. I don't think a 45 Colt would fit in the chamber.

Just so you know your 44shot garden gun was never meant to be shot with a 410 shotshell although many 2" 410's where used. 44shot,44xl,44-40,and 44GG(GameGetter)where all the same cartridge. Plus many 44shot garden guns where marked "Not for Ball" So a single projectile cartridge could be disastrous.

I became aware of that after shooting 2 1/2" shells. Interestingly, the shells crimp extended perfectly so no indication of a short chamber.

I've seen a few that where shot with 2.5" to the point they where too unsafe to use any more.

The action is tight and locks up solid. My grandfather was a bird dog trainer and used it for training and shooting quail for 40 years. Thanks for your comments.

My cousin makes ammo for his 44XL from 7x57R(shortened) cases I gave him, it works like a charm.

I use 444 Marlin

My cousin and I talked about 444, but my experience with it in my 410 pistol shows the simi rim is much more prone to slip behind the extractor.7x57R,8x57R, 7x65R,9.3x74R, 30-40 Krag, 303 British can all be used( 30-40 & 303 a little small)but I had more of the 7x57R-there is nothing magic about that particular case.
