Hello from India,

I have a .450/400 3" double A. Hollis & Son London and I wish to fit Trijicon rmr or any sight similar to rmr.
The issue is that there is no such provision to fit any mount or rail on the rifle . Please help me with your expert suggestions.

Cheers,

S...

Hello
Welcome on your first posting
Any modification to the Hollis will cause its current value
to drop considerably.
That being said, if you still insist on the modification, the rib
will have to be drilled and tapped and a special base machined.

Again, welcome
Mike

Perhaps this would be a start

Thank you Mike for the above suggestions.
I would not have thought of doing the modification, but both barrels shoot about 7"- 8" high.
In past years there was no use of my double except shooting on paper targets, but now hunting Blue bull and wild boar is opened in one of the states in my country.
This is the only time when I can actually enjoy the performance of my British Beauty.

How to upload pics ?
Sudesh:

If the issue is only the point of impact, you could install a taller front sight to move the point of impact lower. There's a formula for how much taller the front sight needs to be, although I cannot remember it. I'm sure someone more mathematically inclined than I will post it in due course.

If the problem is that your eyesight will no longer allow you to use the standard iron sights on your rifle, well, welcome to the club. Getting old is no fun, but it does beat the alternative.

To upload pictures
You will need a web hosting site like
www.hunt101.com
and then store a picture there
and then capture the IMG code and paste here

Another option would be a custom built base for your reflex sight which fits in to the dovetail from the original sight. Costly and not always possible depending upon geometry but worth considering.

Beautiful rifle !!
Wonderful flip up bead front sight ,
A taller front insert should be able to be made.
Is the front sight blade pinned in?
Good luck
Mike

P.S. any ammo with a smaller bullet weight should shoot lower
Very nice rifle Sudesh. I use a "SeeAll" optical sight on my 12ga/.43 Mauser combination gun:

If you are willing to attach a strip of Picnatinney rail to you're top rib, you can mount any sight you wish on your rifle. It won't look good though.JMHO...Geo

Thanks Mike.
I am attaching close up pics of sight and more. Sorry for poor image quality.

In regard with ammo! The only available ammunition in India is Kynoch 400 grn. and that too 30-40 years old. I have no other choice than buying those ammo and re-prime it.
I had tried and failed to procure unprimed Hornady cases and bullet heads as I did not find any website which would ship to India.

Thanks Geo for the suggestion, but picnatinny rail won't look good on a double rifle.
Me too have a combination drilling 12ga - 12ga- 6.5x52r Side lock hammer, 26" barrel Simson Suhl.

Clearly the front sight is removable.
Flip up the ivory sight, remove the screw in front
of the site base, push the sight insert out.

Have another made locally that is taller, too tall and file it
off until you have what you want.

Wonderful thread

Suedsh,
I believe if you have a special base with several rare earth magnets to hold it down to the rib, and put it on against the back of the standing leaf of the rear sight, it will hold. You might think of a projection on each side of the rib, to prevent bumping it sideways. These little magnets are vary strong and can be stacked to increase the strength, as well as using several stacks epoxied into counterbored holes in the base. This wouldn't require modifying the rifle. I don't know where you live, but Federal loads 450/400-3" now, and new Kynoch is being produced.

Add my welcome to the Board, Sudesh.

Good to hear that an Indian state has opened to big game hunting.

Der Ami has given a possible way to fix a rail that would be machined to take the appropriate base to your rib. Key is to be sure that the rail allows you to butt the base up against your back sight so the sight serves as a recoil stop.

I had such a rail screwed into the rib of my .350 No. 2 and used a Leupold 2.5X fixed scope (no reflex sights in those days), but had to put both rings on the front lens shaft of the scope.

The Trijicon RMR06 will work more easily than any scope. There may just be enough height in your existing rib behind the back sight to machine it to fit one of the bases that you can buy for an RMR06 rather than have to figure out how to fix a rail to that part of the rib...
