Saturday I was at a little S x S event at a range here in GA. After it was over I was browsing the pro shop, which is way above average in the stock on hand ......... guns and accessories. Something caught my eye. It was a shipment that had arrived the previous day consisting of two boxes from Steve Barnett in MS. The small box was opened and contained 100 rounds of .600 NE in two different loadings. The other contained a Westley Richards double .600 NE. The range owner was acting as the transfer agent for someone who had bought the gun from Barnett and had not yet come to get it. I was not able to look at the gun as the box had not been opened, but the box of ammo had. Those cartridges are breath taking in size. I've dealt with some .50 BMG rounds , and a Barrett rifle, and they are huge, but I cannot imagine touching these off in a double rifle. I came home and looked on Steve's site and saw what I think is the rifle, listed. So, I assume it was the rifle that was there. How I would have liked to have been able to handle it, and shoot it a couple times. Those 100 rounds cost the new owner $32 each ($3200 worth of cartridges).

The next day a friend rode up there to talk to the range owner about ordering a new gun for him and I told him to take a look at the cartridges. They were gone, however, the new owner had picked up the double rifle that morning, and had actually shot it 6 times at the range. Range owner told my friend the purchase price for the Westley Richards was $120,000. New gun, test fired only.

There is some thought that the market is soft on doubles right now, but there will always be those few with the means to spend whatever they desire for guns. I can only imagine it.

I assume this is the gun:

All my best, SRH

That is very interesting, thanks. I must have a .577 Nitro cartridge in my collection somewhere I think.

With kind regards,

I was having that conversation with someone this morning.
There just isn't much left on the planet to shoot with it.

Some 40 odd years ago I had a choice of 2 1902 Webleys. One was in 450-400 3 1/4 NE and the other was a 600 NE. I chose the 400 as a shooter. The 600 would, in hindsight, have been a great investment.
