I picked up a set of Winchester 101 28g barrels that have been sleeved to a double rifle. The barrels are in process and all the sleeving work is done, but extractors are not fitted and the barrels are still short chambered.

The bores are .35 caliber. I cast the chambers and i am having a verh hard time thinking about what they could be. The chamber is neatly 3" long! 2.9" from breech to end of case. Way longer than a 30-06 length case.

There is very little shoulder on the chamber. And there is no rim cut in the breech face yet.

Any ideas as to what the intended caliber may be? Just looking to be pointed in some directions to compare my casting to.

Without a chamber cast it is hard to guess. The cartridge that comes to mind though is a .360 #2 Nitro Express 3".

Just re-read your post. Very little shoulder. Maybe a 9.3x72R. Again, a chamber cast will help clear it up.

I did cast the chamber.

The length from breech face is ~2.925"
Neck diameter is ~.392"
The shoulder length is ~.08"
Diameter behind shoulder is .410"
Diameter at breech face is .470"

Bore diameter in front of neck is ~.367"

Like i said, the barrels are just sleeved in and extractors are not fitted yet. So there is no rim cut yet to get a rim measurement from.

I agree with Dave 9.3x72R Sauer

I vote for 9.3x74R, this cartridge is readily available, in addition to being a fine cartridge.

Here is a diagram of it. This one is metric. The second link is a picture.

Thanks. Looking at the measuremrnts it sure looks like that is what it was meant to be.

The diameter("at the breech face")of .470 is too small for the 9.3x72R S&S, but will work with the 9.3x74R. The length is also a little long for the Sauer, but chambers are often longer than the case. The "bore"( I guess you mean groove)diameter of .367" is a couple thousandths over German dimensions, but they must be new, likely American, barrels.

Yes, the barrels were sleeved (and never finished) by Bill Swartz of Lefever Arms. I bought them from his estate auction. For $35, they were worth the price. Just trying to ID them so i can keep an eye out for a gun to put them on and finish them.

If re-sell is your intent might send the chamber cast to Dave at CH4D die. Get a set of dies made up. Likely he has something on hand that can be easily altered. Last one he did for me no charge over the regular die cost.

Selling with dies that fit the gun is a lot easier.

And easier still, if it is a currently available cartridge such as 9.3x74R.
