It didn't take long for the 280 Flanged (light high speed bullets) to blow up on lions and such and this caliber was history at the turn of the 20th century. Just an FYI for anyone looking for this obselete ammo. Granted, it's not practical but I saw some the other day. No price yet but if there's anyone interested I'll investigate further.
I recall a brother of some British prime minister (Grey?) met his waterloo shooting 145gr .280 cal bullets at a charging lion. I think the rifle was a .280 Ross, though.
I guess this is similar to 7x65R; excellent for a wide range of hunting with proper bullets. But not a wise choice for lion.
