I asked earlier about having a broken hammer repaired on a Bernardelli hammer gun and, based upon recommendations, sent it to Buck Hamlin for repair.

Mr. Hamlin called today to tell me that the hammer is a poor quality casting with a large number of voids and is probably not repairable, given the poor quality. He suggested I find someone who could procure higher quality replacement hammers and have both repaired, as the other is likely to suffer from the same defects.

So, can you suggest someone to do the work of finding the correct hammers, fitting them to the gun and having them engraved to a level reasonably matching the Italia Extra engraving level?

Thanks.

Rem,
I may have some whizz bang technology that will do the trick. I am just now installing the software to run a new laser scanner. Once it is up and running I will know better. The first project is a simpler set of hammers, then a trigger for an old martini. I should know by then but I need to get a few projects completed with it before I know the capabilities of the machine.

Steve:

Thanks. Once I get the gun back from Mr. Hamlin, I'll give you a call. If you think it would be helpful, I'll take photos of the hammers and send them to you so you can see what's currently on the gun. I'm not necessarily looking to match them, but I am seeking something appropriate to the level of fit and finish on the gun.

We can do that I am sure.

Rem,

Have you tried Bernadelli? They still manufacture hammer guns and may have some or may have suitable replacements.

Not for nothin' but I'd want to make sure they just don't send more of the same inferior parts they used the first time around....

Both of these firms do wide ranges of investment cast hammers, for muzzle- and breech-loaders. I helped an American correspondent to find one for, of all things, a Calisher and Terry capping breech-loader. You are unlikely to find a close match (unless you are parpared to do a lot of filing), so you will probably have to replace the pair. They do need to be finished and have the tumbler square drilled and filed.
