Graham Cooley's book "Cogswell & Harrison" charts Coggie models, but it isn't gospel - C&H was rather erratic in slapping names on different models. I don't know who can pin down serial numbers - but C&H has the old records and may be able to help.
Posted By: eightbore Re: Cogswell & Harrison - 08/20/08 09:51 PM
If I remember correctly, the book has numbers by year. What is your serial number?
Posted By: CJO Re: Cogswell & Harrison - 08/21/08 03:17 PM
"The Victor" Extra quality,...Ser # is 10887,..built on a W&C Scott back lock action

The address on the label is "142 New bond Street & 226 Strand London"

The number chart in Nigel Brown's London Gunmakers shows 1881, #10,819 and 1882, 11,307, apparently the last numbers of each year. The C&H book does not seem to have a chart of serial numbers.

Being that this gun is 127 years old ( 1881 ) was the Scott pattented back lock action the first Hammerless design at the time??

I believe Lefever filed a patent 229,429 in 1880.

CJ,
This does not transfer well from a table, but it is decipherable with a bit of effort. It is a list of some dates/models/prices sold/unsold at UK (mainly) auctions. Hope it is of some use to somebody

Here's the problem with trying to date Coggies:

41099 1906
28035 1907
40967 1908
42712 1908
42126 1909
41196 1909
44230 1911
44121 1912

The serial numbers seem not to be strictly consecutive, with lower numbers sometimes appearing on later guns. Perhaps the sequence indicates when the action was completed rather than the gun finished. The pigeon gun #28035 is apparently a totally different numerical sequence.

So...good luck!

Thank you Kerryman!....that's a lot of info, thanks for taking the time

DT ...I have a call in to C&H requesting a Certificate of origin,...just waiting for a reply

The gun in question is a cased two bbl set 28 & 30" in as fine original condition as I have ever encountered for something this old. mint bores and most of their brown finish still there,...has a beautiful piece of wood for a stock that just happens to fit me to a tee

The case needs some work as someone busted the lock to get it open,..keys were probably missing-- there is a wonderful smell of old that emanates from the case and gun,...you all know what I mean,..it just takes you back.

I don't like to tease so here is a couple of pictures to start,..will take some more over the weekend but won't be able to post or even go online from home since my interenet has crapped out

Verrrry nice..... C.J. The early Coggies are usually very high quality, both hammer and hammerless, you have found a beauty.
Enjoy, Terry

Hey Jack and Kerryman,
I own 40967 and it was completed on September 12, 1906 according to the certificate of origin from Cogswell and Harrison. The only reliable way I have found to date a Coggie is to get the completion date directly from them.

This is the response I got from C&H

August 24th 2008

Dear Mr Opacak

Shotgun S/N 10887 refs: 41/1P; 144/2P; 223/3P.

The index to our archives shows that this gun was completed on 6th April 1881. It also shows that there are full original records on this gun in the archive section for that year. There is also an entry in the 1896 archive.

Our service is to access the antique books, extract all the details and print them out on a Certificate of Origin bearing your own name as the current owner. The information includes original measurements, weights, first owner, price paid and other details. The Certificate is very good provenance to have on a C&H gun.

If you would like this service then please send a note giving your full address and the Serial Number again. Also tell us how you would like your name quoted –e.g. middle initial? middle name? and also title.

We presume from the domain name that you are in Canada so include in the envelope a Canadian check for 88 CAD which is the cost of the service. We will respond within two weeks. We do not take card numbers as payment.

We look forward to your order.

Regards from Cogswell & Harrison

I noticed that...CJ do you know how long Scott produced this action ?
Posted By: CJO Re: Cogswell & Harrison - 08/25/08 08:45 PM
I have no idea,...as I understand it it was one of the first successful hammerless actions of the time,..maybe someone can jump in here and tell us

Joe the lockwork is almost identical to the one on my A&Navy

Quite a striking piece of workmanship. You are a fortunate man to have become its caretaker.

Very interesting indeed! You might have better luck asking for information on http://www.internetgunclub.com C. J. Its strikingly similar to a Charles Lancaster "Wristbreaker", is it not? Maybe both were forged by Scott or some other mass trade producer?

No, its nothing at all like a CL "Wristbreaker", the only similarity would be they are both back action guns, thats about it.

CJ's gun was most definatley made by Scott. Maybe finished by Coggie, but more than likely....came out of the Scott factory either completely finished or a working gun in the white just needing engraving. They did the same for E.M. Reilly, H&H (Climax), Coggies (Victor), Gye & Moncrief, and a myriad of other makers on the Isle.
