I think the Savage/Stevens Fox "B" had a (letter)stamp on them to tell what year they were made. Maybe the 311, too. Which model Savage are you talking about? The Blue Book will tell you what years certain models were made.

All the Savage/Stevens guns manufactured from 1948 and 1968 had a date code (in a small circle or oval) stamped on the outside bottom of the frame. The code is a letter and number representing the month and year of production with "A" representing 1948 and the next alphabet letter for each succeeding year. "O" and "Q" were not used. After 1968, of course they were all required to have serial numbers...Geo

the 2 in particular i was thinking about right now are a very, very early 720, and a 430 i lucked up on at cabelas of all places a few days ago. wood was too pretty and condition too good to not bring it home. that one was made for so few years it really doesn't matter anyway. near as i can determine from old shooters bibles it didn't survive WWII and i doubt very many were actually made during the war.

now that you mention it, i think the last time this came up it was regarding 311's or savage/foxes.
