I have found no info on removing buttstock from Winchester model 21.Any help will be much appreciated.I know Foxes,Parkers,Smiths but never worked on model 21.Do sears have to be removed to pull stock. Thanks,Bobby
Remove the trigger guard, remove the floor plate, then the tang screws. It's one of the easier disassemblies out there.
Mike and 5E I have not started yet.Want to have some knowledge and do job correctly. Thanks,Bobby
Hi Bobby,
One thing I'm not reading here is that it is important that both hammers be cocked prior to dropping the trigger plate assembly out of the frame. Otherwise, remaining tension in the hammer mainsprings can drive the trigger plate rearward, as it's coming out of the frame, and possibly chip out wood at the head of the stock.
I saw this happen years ago to a friend's M21 during disassembly and it has stuck with me ever since. They were not big chips, but were certainly nothing you'd want to live with....and would be the devil to repair correctly.
No biggee really other than making sure they are cocked beforehand and having a firm hold on the trigger plate as it's lowered out of the frame.
