Do any of you have information on the French maker Demon Petrik?

The gun in question is a O/U with a very unique action. There is a sliding cover/latch like a K 80 or Remington 3200 but I was told this gun preceded the 3200.

Any information would be appreciated.

The only one I ever saw and got to hold was a very nice and very, very, light 20 bore. The story about the hooded latch is quite interesting. Demon Petrick invented it, and Remington took it (big American industry verses small foreign maker, with a predictable outcome). Remington even had the gall to sell the idea to Krieghoff!

Thank you all.

I will post some pictures in the near future. In discussion with Geoffroy Gournet he said the one I have is the highest grade he has encountered. There is no name I can find but it is 100% engraved. The Petrik mark is on the barrels with dual French proofs.

Thanks again all.

I owned 2, the nicer of them obviously a Petrik but bearing the Gastinne Renette name.

Actually, Petrik invented it.
Others copied it.
Remington successfully used it in the Model 32; not as successfully in the 3200.
Remington gave the design of the entire 32 to Europa Corporation, who contracted with Krieghoff to resume production of the 32. The rest is history.....

APS,
A deceased friend of mine owned two guns which from the information provided I am now convinced were made by,Demon Petrick. One of these guns is pictured on page 74 of the," Gun Book,"by Gough Thomas,[G.T.Garwood] published by Winchester Press in 1970.

Very interesting, answering nearly all questions.
Hope you are able to read french!?

Kind Regards,

A bit of Friday thread resurrection.

I have seen a number of sidelocks using the Petrik action, but I've never been able to determine the maker(s).

The guns using Petrik's action that I know of are all boxlocks: a few branded Petrik, the Remington 32, the Remington 3200, the K32, and the Valmet/Savage variants.

Who made the sidelocks?

And, were there other boxlock makers that I haven't mentioned?

My Gastinne Renette was a sidelock. But they sold guns from other makers, and I always assumed mine was made by Petrik. Might have been wrong.

Thanks, Larry. Have you ever seen a sidelock stamped with Petrik's name?

I think you're right about Petrik making some nice game guns that are generally overlooked. M.W. Reynolds recently had a 5.5 pound 20b with less than $1500 on the sticker: http://www.mwreynolds.com/HTML/shotDamonPetrik.html

Have never seen a Petrik-stamped sidelock. That being said, it's been some time since I've actually seen one, or even a recent picture--until you posted the Reynolds gun. Nice condition, but very basic. I have trouble believing that a) That gun was made with 3" chambers; or b) anyone would be crazy enough to shoot 3" shells in a 5 1/2# gun. I had a Webley & Scott 720 that was factory 3", same weight category. Even 1 oz loads produced snappy recoil.

When I was last in St. Etienne, Hervé Bruchet was just setting up to produce his own version of the Petric. He was completely in love with the design.
I didn't see anything that Berreta or, for that matter, Verney Carron, right across town, couldn't produce cheaper and faster. I also didn't think it was better, in any way, than the more typical O/U by either maker.
I didn't say anything. Wonder how many he built before his company was purchased?

Best,
Ted

A lot of companies have fallen in love with the Petrik. Unfortunately, for those looking for a Petrik that's more in the game gun configuration than target gun, you pretty much have to look for the ones that were made in France. But the design has clearly stood the test of time with target shooters.

I once had one of the Valmet boxlocks. It was a very strong, well made gun. I even used it for slug hunting deer. I now can't seem to recall why I sold it.
